Jerry Springer lives!
“Dip me in chocolate and throw me to the lesbians!”..... “Jerry Springer the Opera” is one of the most exciting theatre nights I have spent this season. New Group presented at the Signature Theatre NYC. Exciting Score, Amazing cast who can do anything, great band, design, and yes...plus sized pole dancers, men in diapers, trannies,Satan, Adam and Eve, Jesus and even God!
There has been much discussion of whether a younger generation even knows who Jerry Springer is...(I didnt even realize he was still taping his show.)
(Apparently it still comes from Stamford Conn. where they bus the audience from mid-town Manhattan.)
Whether Jerry Springer is known by the current generation or not, we are living in Trumpland right now.
It is every bit as bizarre, upside down, and in the rabbit hole as anything ever on Mr. Springer's show.
The audience recognizes that ,and knows on some level this evening of theatre is asking the right questions at the right time.
Are we as a nation going to live in a TV reality show bubble, or are we going to step back from the abyss. Jerry Springer the Opera, is hilarious, over the top, so timely and ultimately powerfully moving!
We are living in a Golden Age of creativity! From the smart infectious “Desperate Measures” at the York Theatre , “The Bands Visit” on Bway, the popularity of young writers in the Operatic world like Ricky Ian Gordon and Jake Hegge, films like “Death of Stalin”, television series like “The Middle”, “Orange is the New Black” and more. There is no lack of amazing creators on par with any period in history. Give them your support!
